The contribution of this thinker to world culture is difficult to overestimate. A prominent figure in the European Enlightenment, he determined not only the intellectual climate of his era, but also the development of ideas and arts in the following centuries. Voltaire was an exponent of the spirit of freethinking and, at the same time, a defender of social order. His prose and drama are full of vivid philosophical insights and caustic satire.
Voltaire's thought influenced many people and entire countries. The Russian Empress Catherine II also corresponded with him. She was deeply interested in his philosophical justifications of monarchy and the ideas of enlightened absolutism, striving to embody them in her reign. The philosopher himself called Catherine, in honor of the great ruler of antiquity, Semiramis of the North.
